Alan Shearer has revealed he wants Newcastle United to remain at St James’ Park - but did not rule out a possible move.

Toon fans are debating whether the club should expand or relocate from their spiritual home since 1892. The stadium’s proximity to Leazes Park and Leazes Park Terrace makes an expansion difficult, with the underground St James Metro Station also problematic towards the Gallowgate End.

Brad Miller, appointed Newcastle’s Chief Operating Officer in the summer, confirmed FFP/PSR as the key factor behind a decision not expected to be finalised until early 2025. He said last month: “We want to make sure it is a very robust process. So regardless of the outcome, I want to stand up in front of everybody throughout the process and say, ‘This is why it is a logical decision, with long-term competitiveness in mind’.

“Because as you have heard a lot, it is all about revenue and PSR. We have to work hard to make sure we give as much money as possible to Paul (Mitchell) and the football side in order to remain competitive on the field.

“In terms of next steps, we are coming towards the end of the next stage, the briefing stage. There are a lot of risks and opportunities at St James’. We have to take time to dig into those and make sure we’ve got the devil in the detail. In terms of the programme, how long it will take and what it will do for us in terms of revenue.”

Newcastle legend Shearer has now thrown his weight behind expansion, although conceded he could support a move on one condition. He told World Soccer Talk: “If it’s at all possible to extend the ground and stay there, then that would be my preferred choice.

“I don’t know the ins and outs and the financials and all of those things, but on a level playing field, if everything was normal, I would prefer to stay at St James’ Park. Even if they’re not (staying), I think it would be really important to keep it centrally located because that’s one of the key things. The great thing about our club is that it’s right in the middle of the city and it means so much to everyone.”
