What happened to Cole Palmer and Marc Cucurella at Chelsea training ahead of Astana trip

Chelsea have been in fine form in recent months. Enzo Maresca's side sit second in the Premier League behind Liverpool and joint top of the UEFA Conference League with four wins from four games.

They are unbeaten in their last eight games in all competitions, with their last loss coming against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup back in October.

There is undoubtedly a feelgood factor surrounding the club at the moment, with Maresca managing to juggle a large playing squad while adding precious victories, including a comeback win against London rivals Tottenham last time out.

There were some standout displays in that game, and some perhaps less-than-stellar performances that allowed Spurs to take the lead. But the three points in a big game will always help, and judging by what has been seen on the Blues' Cobham training ground, spirits are high.

One of those on top form in north London was Cole Palmer, who helped ensure the victory with two goals from the penalty spot in the 4-2 win. For the 21-year-old, it marked the 10th and 11th goals of his Premier League campaign so far, as well as two more in the Carabao Cup.

However, he will not be adding to that in midweek as the England international was not included in the club's Conference League squad.

But the young star was still seen in the final training session ahead of the trip to Kazakhstan, and was involved alongside Marc Cucurella in a central role. Alongside the Spanish defender, the Chelsea star earned a round of slaps to the back of his head during the open training session.

His crime? Winning the Player of the Match award against Spurs. Cucurella was similarly welcomed, though the reason for his punishment were the two slips that led to the hosts' two goals at the start of the match.

Cucurella responded after the game by binning the pair of boots he was wearing at the time, but all seems to have been forgiven by his teammates - especially after he played a part in Jadon Sancho's goal in north London.

Maresca will be hoping to maintain the sense of togetherness among his team as they complete a daunting 7,000 mile round trip to Kazakhstan, although there may be a few first-team regulars left behind with Palmer.
