Wolves boss Gary O’Neil’s is the subject of increasing scrutiny after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to West Ham
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest centre half Michael Dawson says he is not surprised to see Wolves struggling in the relegation places this season after a difficult summer window which saw the team lose club captain Max Kilman to West Ham and star winger Pedro Neto to Chelsea.
Wolves are currently second bottom of the Premier League table with just nine points from their opening 15 matches, leaving them four points from safety and in a position of great jeopardy heading into the Christmas period.
The Old Gold have conceded a league-worst 38 goals in this period, which is alarmingly just three fewer than the amount last season’s basement club Sheffield United had shipped at this stage last season.
Commenting on Wolves’ recent defeat to West Ham, Dawson said: “Well it leaves Wolves in big trouble which is what I predicted at the start of the season and it wasn't too hard to predict when you lose Max Kilman you leave Pedro Neto.
“And this time last year, we were all talking about how well Gary O’Neil had done. Replacing Lopetegui, losing Pedro Neves, and in the end they stayed up quite comfortably. But you’ve got to remember they ended last season quite poorly after that FA Cup knockout to Coventry they never seemed to find that run and their feet again.
“And they're under pressure now. They had two big ones against Fulham you know and the last three they’ve lost. And it’s hard for Gary O’Neil, you can see it in his interview, the pressure. Listening to his post match interview last night he’s talking about losing senior players and how hard it is.
“And they’re up against it, there's no doubt about that. They’ve got just nine points and they're four away from safety. The one coming up against Ipswich is massive. The last one was massive and they lost that. But this one is huge on the weekend.”
