U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday announced his decision to propose Kimberly Guilfoyle as the next U.S. ambassador to Greece. Guilfoyle’s appointment must be approved by the Senate following a hearing conducted in the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
Trump’s pick is a former Fox News host turned political fundraiser and has been engaged to Donald Trump Jr. In the past, she has served as deputy district attorney in California and was Trump’s advisor, while she has also been married to current California governor Gavin Newsom.
In his announcement of her posting to Greece on the social media platform Truth Social, the president-elect called Guilfoyle “ a close friend and ally,” adding:
“ Her extensive experience and leadership in law, media, and politics along with her sharp intellect make her supremely qualified to represent the United States and to protect our interests abroad.” He described her as the ideal candidate for strengthening the strong bilateral relations with Greece and to promote U.S. interests in matters ranging from defence cooperation to trade and economic innovation.
Responding to the announcement, Guilfoyle thanked the president-elect in a post on the social media platform X:
“I’m honored to accept President Trump’s nomination to serve as the next Ambassador to Greece and I look forward to earning the support of the U.S. Senate.
“President Trump’s historic victory is bringing hope and optimism to the American people and to freedom-loving allies across the world.
“It was the democratic values born in Greece that helped shape the founding of America.
“And now, we have an opportunity to honor that history by bringing better days here at home and abroad.
“As ambassador, I look forward to delivering on the Trump agenda, supporting our Greek allies, and ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity.”
The proposal was also welcomed by Greek-American former candidate Senator for Maryland, Chrysovalantis Kefalas, with the following social media message:
“As a Greek-American, the importance of our ties as a people and as countries with shared values and shared dreams is so important. As a candidate for U.S. Senate, Kimberly Guilfoyle took an interest in me. And I today see the opportunity she has ahead to strengthen the Greek-American relationship and to help protect, preserve and perpetuate the values, traditions and aspirations that can build a better future for us all.”
