Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed Leicester City youngster Michael Holding could make his Premier League debut against Newcastle United this weekend.
Signed from Chelsea for £4million in June, the 18-year-old has been gradually introduced to the King Power ranks. Golding has spent most of 2024-25 in the youth setup but was an unused substitute for Leicester’s Carabao Cup win over Walsall in September.
Leicester looked vulnerable three weeks ago but have begun rebuilding under Manchester United legend Van Nistelrooy. A win over West Ham United and late fightback from two goals down to draw with Brighton puts the Foxes five points above the drop zone.
The Dutchman is preparing for his first away game as Leicester boss at St James’ Park this weekend and must deal with a minor injury crisis. With Wilfred Ndidi (hamstring) and Harry Winks (groin) doubts and Boubakary Soumare suspended, Van Nistelrooy has just two first-team midfielders available in Oliver Skipp and Hamza Choudhury.
That could hand a chance to a wonderkid the Foxes nabbed from Chelsea over the summer. Van Nistelrooy said: “We have many options, also for when there are suspensions and injuries. We have some good young lads.

“Michael Golding is there. Will Alves is a bit higher up the pitch, more of a winger or a no.10, but there’s a lot of options here and it’s great to work like this.”
Van Nistelrooy set the remit for Golding - or any midfielder - ahead of the clash against Newcastle on Saturday. He added: “On the ball, we want to play, so they need to be able to provide us the link between the back three towards the no.10s and the wingers.
“It’s quite a profile for an all-around player. One game you will use more of a No.8 profile than a No.6 profile, but we have it all in the squad.”
