A dad has thanked a young Liverpool FC player after he helped the footballer pass his driving test. Roland Csaszar, 34, from Crosby, is a driving instructor.

Roland, who is originally from Hungary and a huge Liverpool fan, has been running Roland Driving Instruction since 2021. He offers lessons in both manual and automatic cars.

On November 1, Roland received a message from Trent Kone-Doherty, who currently plays for Liverpool’s academy. The forward from Derry is an exciting prospect. He signed for Liverpool from Derry City in 2022 for a reported £150,000, a large fee for a youth player. The 18-year-old scored last night for Liverpool’s under-19s in their UEFA Youth League game against Girona.

Speaking to the ECHO, Roland said: “He got in touch on Instagram, asking if I was available soon. I thought, I hope so, I really hope so. I knew about him as I follow the youngsters at the club a bit. I knew they bought him from Ireland for big money.”

However, Roland was happy to find the attacker was already a good driver. He said: “He’d had driving lessons before and was on a pretty good level. I was pretty confident he’d pass. He proved his driving skills.

“We’d start the lessons sometimes from Kirkby at the training centre, sometimes from Anfield. We’d finish the lessons close to where he lives, near Warrington, so he had to drive on the motorway but he did well.”

After a fast pass course with 10 hours of lessons, Kone-Doherty took his driving test on November 24. He passed on his first attempt.

Roland was most impressed though with Kone-Doherty as a person. He said: “He signed items for all my family. I would say he was pretty friendly. We played a couple of games on FC 25 against each other.”

EA FC 25 is the world’s biggest football action video game. Roland says he was delighted to take up a few games, as he used to play them for a living. He said: “I used to be a professional e-sports player. I decided to become a driving instructor during covid. I wanted to be my own boss and do something I really liked.”

Roland is now becoming the go-to choice for young LFC footballers looking to pass their driving test. In the last year, midfielder Harvey Elliott and Scouse forward Jayden Danns have also passed thanks to his teaching. It all started last year when Elliott send Roland a message on Instagram last year asking for lessons.

Both Elliott and Danns also gave Roland signed shirts. All of these are cherished by both him and his young son Joshua. Roland says he is not phased by working with players from his favourite football team.

He said: “I would never have believed when I started that I would get this close to Liverpool players. It's nice to have them enjoying their time with me. I'm pretty sure Jayden, Trent and Harvey will recommend me to others.

“I get much more enquires now about driving lessons than I had when I stared. I’ve also had a couple of requests and enquiries from players of different football teams.

“I'm a Liverpool supporter and it's very important that I help them pass on their first attempt. It’s more pressure working with them but I enjoy it.” You can find out more about Roland’s driving school via @passwithroland on Instagram.
