With 2024 soon coming to an end, the league phase of the newly formatted UEFA Champions League is also starting to take shape.
Barcelona are in a good position, with four wins accumulated in just five matches. The Catalans could solidify their position in the guaranteed top-eight spots if they are able to beat Borussia Dortmund tonight.
Real Madrid, in contrast, are struggling in 18th spot, having secured only three wins in six matches. Their position improved following a hard-fought win over Atalanta last night.
Could there be a Clasico in UCL playoffs?
While it seems increasingly likely that Barcelona may finish in the top eight, the club could be set for a Clasico showdown with Real Madrid if both clubs fail to qualify for the guaranteed spots.
The draw for the knockout play-off will take place on January 31, 2025, and the matches will be played in February.

If both Real Madrid and Barcelona find themselves in the playoff pool, the draw will determine whether they face each other or another opponent.
It’s worth noting that the format of the knockout play-off is such that teams from the same federation can be drawn against each other, which is a pivot from earlier rules.
This means that a Clasico clash is entirely possible, a tantalising prospect for both sets of fans.
The two Spanish giants have already met this season, with Hansi Flick’s men coming out as clear 4-0 victors. However, the battle could be on a more equal footing next time, as Barça have lost significant momentum in recent times.
