Liverpool stands alone at the top of the Champions League league phase with a perfect record of six wins from six matches.
Their dominant performances had already mathematically guaranteed at least a playoff place before Girona, but the win in Catalonia has allowed the Reds to secure automatic Round of 16 qualification.
This achievement bypasses the need for a playoff round in February, where teams finishing 9th-24th must compete for the remaining knockout spots.
This could potentially be crucial when considering the raw amount of games that Liverpool will otherwise play this season.
But it seems that the club is also benefiting financially from the excellent European record.
How much Liverpool could earn from the Champions League campaign?
The Reds are currently considered favorites to win the Champions League, with a 20% chance according to statistical models.
Their potential path through the knockout stages would be influenced by their final league phase position, with a top-two finish guaranteeing a favorable draw against teams finishing 15th-18th in the Round of 16.
The knockout stages begin in March 2025, with the final scheduled for May 31, 2025, in Munich.
Liverpool’s participation in the 2024/25 Champions League already secured them a substantial £15.34m base payment just for qualifying for the competition’s main tournament phase – the knock-out stage.
The Reds’ remarkable perfect record of six wins from six matches has generated significant additional revenue according to UEFA :
£1.73m per victory, totaling £10.38m from wins so far
Potential for additional £3.46m from remaining two matches
Each draw would earn £577k, while losses receive no financial reward
Liverpool’s current top position in the league phase standings could yield substantial rewards:
£8.16m bonus for finishing first (36 payments of £226.6k per position)
Already secured £1.65m for guaranteeing a top-eight finish
Automatic Round of 16 qualification bonus of £9m
If Liverpool maintain their perfect record and top position through their final two matches against PSV and Lille, their total earnings from the league phase would reach approximately £48m.
Even with their current position, they have guaranteed at least £44.53m.
Additional prize money available in knockout stages:
Quarter-finals: £10.6m
Semi-finals: £12.7m
Runners-up: £15.6m
Winners: £21.1m
This new format represents a significant increase from previous seasons, with the total prize pool increasing by 33% compared to the 2023/24 campaign.
