Keith Hackett said he disagrees with Howard Webb’s opinion that Moises Caicedo’s challenge on Pape Matar Sarr in Tottenham versus Chelsea did not merit a red card.
The Ecuador international escaped punishment for a challenge that caught the Spurs midfielder on the shin during Chelsea’s comeback 4-3 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (8 December).
Referee Anthony Taylor was not advised to go and check the incident on the screen with the decision proving decisive.
Current PGMOL chief Howard Webb told Michael Owen on the latest edition of Match Officials Mic’d Up (Premier League official website, 11 December): “I think a yellow card should have been shown. Caicedo received no disciplinary sanction for that action. I think his actions are reckless.
“I know there was talk about the possibility of this being a red card. Some people felt it was. It’s not a red card for me. This is a situation where Moises Caicedo goes to swing to kick a ball, which is kicked away from him by Pape Sarr.”

However, ex-PGMOL chief Hackett – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – disagreed with Webb’s interpretation of the incident.
“If the boot of an opponent, in making a challenge in the way that Caicedo made contact with his opponent, then I believe that it did endanger the safety of his opponent,” he said.
“The landing area of the boot on the opposing player with Caicedo’s forward movement and the movement of his opponent was sufficient to award a red card.
“There was in my opinion excessive force and the challenge endangered the safety of the opponent – therefore it constitutes serious foul play.
“I disagree with Howard Webb’s interpretation, which of course is subjective.”
Tottenham hard done by Moises Caicedo in Chelsea defeat
Tottenham, of course, had more issues in the game than just this one contentious defeat, with an early two-goal lead wiped out to suffer a demoralising defeat.
But what was frustrating is that Taylor wasn’t even told to go and have another look, the technology is there surely he should have been given the option to see it again.

It’s the lack of consistency that gets people so riled. Players have seen red for way less than what Caicedo did to Sarr.
Ultimately, it won’t change the outcome of the game now, but yet again it’s a lack of consistency among officials that is stealing the headlines.
