Jamal Lewis reportedly “has a good chance” of undergoing surgery and is already back in England ahead of a potential Newcastle United return.
Sent on loan to Sao Paolo in the summer, the left-back played just six times before suffering a potential season-ending ankle injury. The news is the latest in a long line of struggles for Lewis since joining the Magpies in 2020.
He was billed as a future star when Newcastle paid Norwich City £13million four years ago. However, just 36 appearances has done little to justify the price tag, with Lewis loaned out to Watford last season.
A spell in Brazil raised eyebrows but now looks certain to end as Sao Paulo sporting director Carlos Belmonte revealed a clause in the player’s contract. He said last week: “The position is the board’s priority in the transfer market, and the dream is Wendell, from Porto.
“However, if the Portuguese club demands financial compensation, Sao Paulo will be in a complicated position in the deal. Jamal might not be (a Sao Paulo player soon). We have a clause in his contract.

“Newcastle could call him up at the start of the season, and we could return him. Our relationship with Newcastle is exceptional. He’s got an ankle problem and we’re making an assessment. It’s already been agreed with Newcastle (that) if he has to have surgery, he’ll go back for the surgery and the recovery process in England.”
Gazeta Esportiva now claim Lewis’ worst fears are set to be confirmed and he will undergo surgery on his ankle. The 25-year-old’s contract at St James’ Park is set to expire at the end of the season.
