‘We have lost our minds…’: Matheus Cunha pinpoints why Wolves are struggling in the Premier…

Matheus Cunha has offered an honest assessment of why Wolves currently find themselves in a relegation battle.

Wolves are in a mess. Despite boasting a team full of internationals who play for countries such as Brazil, Portugal and Spain, the club are 19th in the Premier League, four points from safety.

Who is to blame has consistently done the rounds. Fans have wanted Gary O’Neil sacked after recording just three league wins in 25 games.

Fosun has also been criticised. After the 2-1 defeat to West Ham, O’Neil made a point about the Wolves’ poor spending power and how the squad had been significantly depleted.

However, on the pitch little has improved, with the club continuing to ship goals in important moments.

Now, Cunha has come out and pinpointed where Wolves are going wrong after three successive defeats.

One player who can hold his head high this season is Cunha. The Brazilian attacker has 10 goal contributions so far in this campaign and has consistently found the net.

This saw Cunha nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month for November after a terrific few games.

Yet, despite all his efforts, Wolves find themselves deep in trouble with Championship football looming over their shoulders.

With two massive games coming up against Ipswich and Leicester, Cunha has highlighted what the club are doing wrong and how they are trying to fix it.

He told Sky Sports reporter, Danyal Khan: “Honestly I feel we’ve sometimes lost our minds in the games – how to control a game, with the situation it’s very hard – we’ve lost our structure in games and conceded goals but when you are in these situations there are a lot of things more than the pitch but, the only thing we can do is go to training, fix the things we need to fix and of course, come back and perform better.”

Wolves’ defensive structure and discipline have collapsed this campaign

Wolves’ backline is easily the most frustrating part of the campaign. Many of the defenders simply lose their heads at vital moments in the game.

The West Ham result was a key example of this. After limiting the hosts to few chances in the first half, Wolves gifted the Hammers the lead from a straightforward set-piece.

Despite the goal being an isolated mistake, the defence lost all structure and were lucky not to go 2-0 down immediately after VAR ruled out Mohammed Kudus’ strike.

Then, after Matt Doherty’s equaliser, Wolves once again lost their discipline which saw Jarrod Bowen net the eventual winner.

Wolves have shown multiple times this season that their defence is capable of performing to the standards expected of them; the matches against Southampton, Man City and Liverpool are evidence of this.

However, Wolves must learn from their mistakes and stay focused on the task at hand.
