Ange Postecoglou has revealed “emotional” Cristian Romero has apologised for his stinging criticism of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.
And the Aussie boss insisted the problems at the club this season are “not because of one person or one thing”. Spurs sit in 11th place in the Premier League with a big week of fixtures against Rangers, Southampton and Manchester United in three different competitions.
And Romero gave an interview with Spanish TV after sustaining a quad injury in the weekend defeat to Chelsea suggesting players and coaches have taken the blame for the club’s shortcomings in recent seasons - and not Levy. “Hopefully they realise who the true responsible ones are,” he said.
But speaking on his return to Glasgow, former Celtic boss Postecoglou said: “In the context of the day, Cristian was more than disappointed by fact worked hard to get back and then had to go off watch the team and feel the pain of another defeat. He is very emotional, a leader in the club and hasn't been able to help us and was trying to help by saying we’re going through a tough time and aware of what we’re doing.

The other part was that it was not expressed in the right way because I don’t feel and not my belief that our challenges at the moment are because of one thing or one person. I don’t believe that and never believed that. It will only happen if we are united as a group. Get through the other side and come out stronger.
“A lot of what he said was good, some of it was not right and shouldn’t be said in public. We will deal with in it our four walls t- I wouldn’t criticise a player in a public sense.”
Romero also claimed Premier League rivals spend more on their squads. Mauricio Pochettino did not sign a single player in the 2018 summer window while last summer Spurs spent £65million on Dominic Solanke and also bought three teenagers.

“ Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn't do well, strengthens again, and now they're seeing results,” Romero said. “Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they realise it."
Postecoglou responded: “It depends in what respect. We know there are things we can compete with. I don’t think just about finances. Yes where the club sits we know there's a gap, not just us, most clubs but within that don’t think it means you can’t be competitive in your own way.
"What Cristian is talking about and what I believe is should try think like those clubs and be successful every year. I just don’t think it’s one thing that will get us where we want to and not just one thing stopping us getting there.”
Romero joins Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies on the club’s lengthening injury list. “It is by a fair stretch the worst I’ve seen,” said the head coach.
Postecoglou won five trophies in his two seasons with Celtic after joining in June 2021 including the treble in his second season. “I think you know what kind of reception I will get!” said the Aussie.
