Joe Gomez has revealed that he is close to scoring his first Liverpool goal in eight years because of one factor.

The English defender has been at Liverpool since 2015 after joining from Charlton Athletic in a reported £3.5 million deal.

He has played 235 times for Liverpool but has yet to score for the club.

However, his lack of goals has not negatively impacted his Liverpool career, as what he lacks in attack, he makes up with strong defending and good attitude.

Yet there is a desire among the fanbase for the 27-year-old to finally score for the club. It seems like whenever Gomez crosses the halfway line at Anfield, somebody has to be the person to shout ‘shoot’ at him.

It is easy to understand why, as only two players in Liverpool’s history have clocked up more appearances than Gomez’s tally of 235 without scoring.

Earlier this year, he told the We Are Liverpool podcast about his desire score and how even Jurgen Klopp was trying to motivate him to get a goal.

“I score in training, I get some in training,” he revealed.

“I don’t know, it’s weird because obviously, eight years, it’s never been that apparent, and now suddenly even the gaffer gave me a bit.

“He said he’d give my wife some money if I scored!”

Gomez went close to breaking his goal-scoring duck in his last game against Girona with a header which was tipped over the bar.

The opportunity came from a corner kick, and Gomez revealed new plans on set-pieces with coach Aaron Briggs means he will be in the box more, which was different under Jurgen Klopp.

What Joe Gomez said

Speaking to The Athletic, Gomez revealed that his odds of scoring have been boosted.

When asked about his celebration plans, Gomez said: “I cannot say I have. It depends on the goal.

“But going up for corners is a big thing. That is one thing that has hindered me this whole time, as I was never up for them, so my odds have been boosted now.”

Gomez also revealed how close he came to leaving Liverpool in the summer after serious interest from Newcastle.

The 27-year-old started Liverpool’s last three games after an injury to Ibrahima Konate.
