Ruben Amorim has slammed Dan Ashworth's brutal Manchester United exit, claiming that "one person leaving doesn't change nothing.”

The former Newcastle man left the club at the weekend after just five months on Sunday. A statement from United read: “Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement. We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”

The decision comes amid a period of change under new boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe. He opted to transform United's backroom team over the summer - which included Ashworth moving to Old Trafford from Newcastle after a lengthy period of talks.

In the aftermath of Ashworth's exit, new Red Devils' boss Amorim was asked about his exit before taking on Viktoria Plzen. And he said that "one person leaving doesn't change nothing", before labelling it as a "bad situation."

The Portuguese coach added: "Since the first day I felt great support from the ownership, from Omar (Berrada) and Jason (Wilcox), and I was part of them. I felt real support from Dan also. This is football and sometimes these things happen."

And while Amorim has shared his stance on Ashworth's exit, the response has not been positive elsewhere within the club. It is suggested that there is a 'sense of deflation' among the women's team as they saw Ashworth as a valuable ally.

The Red Devils have endured a tricky season in all competitions. Former boss Erik ten Hag was sacked in favour of Amorim earlier this campaign.

But they remain 13th in the Premier League table following a 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest - that match proving to be Ashworth's last at Old Trafford. The Red Devils also face a battle to secure a spot in the top eight of the Europa League.

And while Amorim will attempt to get the club back on track, the changes look set to continue behind the scenes. The club will not directly replace Ashworth but current technical director Jason Wilcox has been handed the responsibilities of his role.

United are back in action on Thursday as they travel to Viktoria Plzen. They then clash with fierce rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium over the weekend.
