close

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has made his pick between retired legends Ronaldinho and Steven Gerrard. The Dutchman has been at Anfield since arriving from Southampton in January 2018.

Van Dijk, 33, has been a key player at the heart of the Reds' defence, bagging 25 goals and 13 assists in nearly 300 appearances across competitions. That includes two goals and an assist in 20 outings across competitions this season asa Arne Slot's side lead the Premier League and UEFA Champions League standings.

Regarded as one of the game's finest goalscoring active centre-backs in the game at the moment, Van Dijk made his picks between FIFPRO Men's World 11 legends in a 'knockout' format.

Here's how the fun interaction, as tweeted by GOAL, went:

"Iniesta or Xavi: Iniesta"

"Ronaldinho or Kaka: Ronaldinho"

"Steven Gerrard or Toni Kroos: Stevie G"

"Iker Casillas or Gigi Buffon: Casillas"

"Iniesta or Ronaldinho: Ronaldinho"

"Stevie G or Casillas: Stevie G"

"Ronaldinho or Stevie G: Ronaldinho"

Explaining why he snubbed Reds legend Gerrard for Ronaldinho, Van Dijk explained:

"Because he (Ronaldinho) was my idol when I was younger, so Ronaldinho wins it."

The Dutchman has won every possible trophy at Anfield except the UEFA Europa League.

Van Dijk and Co. are coming off a narrow 1-0 win at competition debutants Girona in midweek to improve their perfect record in this season's UEFA Champions League to six games. They also top the Premier League after 14 games, leading second-placed Chelsea (31) with a game in hand.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot looks on during a press conference

Liverpool have made a superb start to life under new boss Arne Slot, who has succeeded the legendary Jurgen Klopp this summer, having lost just once in 22 games across competitions.

As mentioned above, they top the standings in both the Premier League and the Champions League, where they are the only side to win their opening six games. Slot's side have impressively kept five straight clean sheets in the competition, including a 2-0 home win over holders Real Madrid on matchday five last month.

Following their narrow win at Girona on Tuesday (December 10), the Reds return to Premier League action, where they face Fulham at home on Saturday (December 14).

They next take on Southampton away four days later in the EFL Cup quarter-final before clashing with Tottenham Hotspur away in the Premier League on December 22.
