One of the biggest questions San Francisco 49ers fans have been asking all season long is also one of the most glaring questions across the NFL. Simply put, what is going on with Deebo Samuel? Samuel is undoubtedly one of the most physical and talented players in the league. When he is healthy and doing his thing, you won’t see many players as dangerous as Deebo Samuel. 2023 was an extremely successful year for Samuel. Samuel helped lead the 49ers to an appearance in the Super Bowl, all while striking fear in opposing defenses.
During their Super Bowl run, there was no piece more valuable than Deebo Samuel. His biggest obstacle over the last couple of years has been dealing with the injury bug. Samuel can be utilized as both running back and wide receiver, making him a jack of all trades on the offensive side of the ball. The 2024 season, however, has been an entirely different story. Samuel has seemed absent at times, even lashing out at teammates which is completely out of character for him. With everything going wrong this season, 49er fans have a reason to ask that question I previously mentioned, what is going on with Deebo Samuel?

Deebo’s Frustration Boiling Over
There has been a lot of talk about Deebo Samuel having a down year in 2024. With that being said, you can’t really blame him for everything going wrong in San Francisco. The 49ers, once predicted to be one of the best teams in the league, are now struggling to get back to the playoffs. All the frustration finally came to a head for Samuel, and it was communicated through his Twitter account. In a now-deleted post, the star receiver let the Twitter world know, “not struggling at all just not getting the ball“. If that isn’t an indication of his current state of mind, I don’t know what is.
Although Deebo Samuel isn’t the only 49er player who has been disappointed with the 2024 season, he has definitely let is show on the field. Earlier in the season during the 49ers’ victory over Tampa Bay, Samuel got in a shouting match with long-snapper Taybor Pepper. After kicker Jake Moody missed his third field goal of the game, Samuel wanted to let Moody know he was not pleased with his performance.
Pepper came to Moody’s defense, screaming back at Samuel in an uncharacteristic showing by the 49er players. For a team that has always let their pads do the talking, this is further proof something is off this season. With only a couple of games remaining in 2024, time is running out for San Francisco to get back into the postseason.

Where Does Deebo Go From Here?
With only a few games remaining, what can the 49ers expect from their star running back/wide receiver? He is one of their most valuable offensive players when he is getting the ball and making plays. Maybe one of the reasons he has not getting the ball as much is simply because of his presence of the field. Samuel is so dangerous that opposing defenses will plan their entire weekly playbook around him.
That could be one conclusion. Brock Purdy indicated in a recent press conference that there are times their schemes don’t allow certain players to get the ball. That could be another conclusion. Maybe, just maybe, it could be because Samuel has let his anger get the better of him on multiple occasions. It’s one thing to play angry and still play well, but when you let that anger affect your on-field performance, that’s when the real problems occur.
If getting Deebo Samuel the ball will turn him back into the Deebo Samuel of old, for goodness sake just get him the ball.
