Nowadays, there is plenty of discussion from national NBA news outlets about how to get the San Antonio Spurs more help alongside Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs' young star has shown that he has an elite combination of unbelievable skill and a high-level mentality, and he is primed to take over the league in due time.
One of the most pressing roster issues for San Antonio is acquiring a championship-level point guard of the future. Chris Paul has unsurprisingly been fantastic this season, and his leadership of Wembanyama is already paying dividends. But CP3 will be retiring soon, and the Spurs need to find their long-term fixture at point guard that can continue to allow Wemby to thrive and grow into one of the best players in basketball.
Bleacher Report's latest imagined trade has San Antonio acquiring LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets. Their hypothetical deal has the Spurs sending the Hornets Keldon Johnson, Tre Jones, Malaki Branham, a 2025 first-round pick and two 2027 first-round picks in exchange for Ball.
If this were all it would take for San Antonio to acquire the dazzling talent of LaMelo Ball, you would have to think they would jump at the opportunity. Johnson, Jones and Branham have all brought their own unique value to the Spurs since being drafted by the organization, but their collective talent still may not top that of LaMelo's.
The Spurs would likely be thrilled with this proposal
The idea of a Wembanyama-Ball pairing is an extremely interesting one for multiple reasons. Wembanyama has been in the spotlight from a young age, and has been heralded as having "greatest player of a generation" type potential. That is a lot of weight on a young man's shoulders, but the fact of the matter is that LaMelo Ball is no stranger to that kind of spotlight either.
Becoming famous at the ripe age of 15 years old, LaMelo was plastered all over ESPN and all the major sports networks after scoring 92 points in a high school game for Chino Hills in 2017. Later that year, he and his celebrity family would be featured in a reality TV show - "Ball In The Family." Going viral on TikTok and earning millions of Instagram followers before even becoming a legal adult, Ball knows all about the pressure of high expectations.
Then there is the on-court fit. LaMelo has played with high-flyers and skilled big men, but Victor is a different situation altogether. The two-man game between Ball and Wembanyama would have game-breaking potential with their combination of size and skill.
Not to mention, these two are both extremely unique talents. While Victor is marketed as "the alien," LaMelo has branding phrases like "rare" and "not from here." It almost seems like Ball and Wembanyama would be the perfect point guard and center pairing. This proposed deal is of course a hypothetical one for a reason. But if the offer were ever on the table in real life, the Spurs would be wise to press the button immediately.
