NBA Youngboy, whose birth name is Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, has been sentenced to 23 months in federal prison for possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. He will serve 60 months of probation once released from custody.
In 2020, Gaulden was arrested and detained for a similar charge,Variety reported. He was arrested while filming a music video in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. At the time, he pleaded guilty for possession of firearms. Alongside 15 other people, the rapper was detained and over a dozen guns were seized on set.
Gaulden was then placed on house arrest due to alleged involvement in a 2019 Miami shooting. He spent that time in Utah as part of a plea deal. His lawyers said that “moving to Utah would keep YoungBoy out of trouble,” according tothe Asssociated Press.
Yet, the Utah home was raided in April. Officials found a semi-automatic pistol and evidence of a “large-scale prescription drug fraud ring.” The rapper was charged with alleged forgery, identity fraud and unlawful conduct related to a pharmacy, according toRolling Stone. He pleaded no contest to the charges in November and the rest of the case was dismissed.
Gaulden spent seven months in custody on the Louisiana charge — meaning that his current 23 months sentence could be reduced. Prior to the current deal, he was facing a maximum of 10 and 15 years on the gun charges.
“This has been a long road that involved extensive litigation and ultimately extensive negotiation. Kentrell’s defense team is very happy for Kentrell and we look forward to his many future successes,” defense lawyers Drew Findling, Jeremy Delicino, and Jon Williams said in a statement, per Rolling Stone.
