Newcastle United make enquiry to Barcelona over availability of £25m defender

· December 11 2024, 21:00

Newcastle United are starting to make positive moves in the transfer market with the January window edging ever closer.

A central defender remains a high priority for the Magpies, although not as pressing as it was in the summer thanks to the imminent return to fitness of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

That being said, it would definitely be foolish of Paul Mitchell to not at least see what's out there in the New Year and as such, Caught Offside are now reporting that Newcastle have already made an enquiry for one defender they've long admired.

Andreas Christensen has been on Newcastle's wish list for the past few transfer windows but Barca have always been reluctant to part with the former Chelsea man.

Andreas Christensen is still of interest to Newcastle

Newcastle have stolen a march on Man United for Andreas Christensen

Manchester United are also said to be keen on the Danish international and Barca are finally showing signs that they are ready to sell with the 28-year-old approaching the last year of his contract.

It is being reported that €30 million (£25 million) could be enough to tempt Barcelona to part with Christensen rather than lose him for nothing in a year's time.

While Manchester United are admirers, it appears that Newcastle is the only one of the two clubs to have made any contact with Barcelona over a move.

Newcastle are casting a wide net in the transfer market

Caught Offside go on to claim that Newcastle have approached other sides over other players too which is good to hear after the failure of the apparent 'all eggs in one basket' approach from the summer.

Christensen is an excellent defender and one we'd be happy to welcome to Newcastle for the right price. However, right wing has to be the priority in the next couple of windows.

We aren't expecting a lot of incoming traffic in January so we can wait until summer for a winger if we have to, but the sooner that position is addressed the easier we can all breathe.
