CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Gray News) – Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is headed to North Carolina, according to reports.
Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion, was reportedly offered the head coaching job at the University of North Carolina, according to a local report from WRAL.
The offer comes a few days after he had “a couple of good conversations” with North Carolina Chancellor Lee Roberts about the job, according to the Associated Press.
According to ESPN, sources said the deal was being finalized as of Wednesday afternoon but that the “ball is in Belichick’s court.”
Sources, later reported by CNN, say Belichick had accepted the deal.
Belichick has never coached at the college level, but he said his approach wouldn’t be any different than how he treats the NFL.
“If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL,” Belichick said. “It would be a professional program: training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques that would transfer to the NFL … It would be an NFL program at a college level.”
As for his potential salary with UNC, insiders say his contract is worth $30 million over three years, CNN reported.
