Ex-Patriots assistant joins Bill Belichick at UNC as program’s GM

Another former member of the Patriots is heading to North Carolina.

Mike Lombardi will be general manager of the Tar Heels football program and leave his analyst job at VSiN. Lombardi joins Bill Belichick, who was named UNC’s coach on Wednesday night.

“I’m excited to join Coach Belichick at North Carolina,” Lombardi said in a statement released by VSiN. “Although leaving my VSIN family will be hard, I’m excited to return to helping build a winning program. I’m forever thankful for all the great people at VSIN, especially Bill Adee and the Musburger family.”

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport posted to X that Lombardi was “essential” in helping Belichick get the job.

The duo worked together from 2014-16 with the New England Patriots when Belichick was coach and Lombardi was an assistant.

Belichick and Lombardi are close friends and will now help reshape UNC’s football program after it fired coach Mack Brown.

The two bring a wealth of experience at the NFL level to Chapel Hill. While Belichick has not worked at the collegiate level, Lombardi has as an adviser for the Washington Huskies.

It will be interesting to see if Belichick and Lombardi bring other former Patriots assistants like Matt Patricia or Josh McDaniels on board.
