(Bloomberg) -- Bill Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots, is jumping to college football.
Belichick and the University of North Carolina have agreed on a deal that’s expected to be worth $30 million over three years, The Athletic reported Wednesday, citing people briefed on the matter. The hiring will bring one of professional football’s most successful coaches to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
UNC confirmed in a statement late Wednesday that Belichick will succeed Mack Brown, with the move pending board approval.
The deal makes Belichick, 72, one of the highest-paid coaches in the college game. Earlier this year, the University of Georgia signed Kirby Smart to a reported 10-year, $130 million contract, making him the top-earning college coach in the country.
In Belichick’s 24-year tenure with the Patriots, he and quarterback Tom Brady built the franchise into a perennial contender. Including an earlier stint with the Cleveland Browns, Belichick won 333 games as a head coach, second only to Don Shula in National Football League history. Belichick also notched two Super Bowl titles as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants.
He earned a reported $25 million in his final year with the Patriots. Since parting ways with the team in 2023, he has appeared on ESPN’s Monday Night Football “ManningCasts,” commenting on games with former NFL quarterbacks Eli and Peyton Manning.
UNC had a record of six wins and six losses this year, and will play against the University of Connecticut in a bowl game on Dec. 28 at Boston’s Fenway Park.
