Liverpool are one of several clubs said to be monitoring one of Scotland’s top talents.

Evolution rather than revolution has been the tone set by Arne Slot during the early months of his managerial reign at Liverpool.

Replacing Jurgen Klopp was never going to be an easy task after the German led the Reds to the Premier League title, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League during a highly successful tenure at Anfield. Yet by resisting the temptation to overhaul the squad he inherited from the German and tinkering the style of play that brought so much success, Slot has taken the challenges of succeeding Klopp in his stride and there are promising signs he can land major silverware during his first season in charge.

A surprisingly quiet summer transfer window set the tone for an almost effortless transition into the post-Klopp era as Italian international winger Federico Chiesa and Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili became the only new additions to the squad Slot inherited. There were departures too as Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho joined Brentford, Adrian returned to Spain on a free transfer and both Joel Matip and Thiago were released. Several loan departures were authorised as Mamardashvili returned to Valencia for the season and youngsters Stefan Bajectic, Ben Doak and Calvin Ramsey were all handed a chance to earn further senior experience elsewhere.

There is a crop of youngsters currently working their way through the Anfield ranks and there have been several reports suggesting the Reds are hoping to complete a move for one of Scotland’s most promising talents to supplement their homegrown prospects.

Despite receiving interest from the likes of Newcastle United, Brighton and Southampton, it is Liverpool that are said to be ready to submit an offer of around £6m to land Motherwell ‘wonderkid’ Lennon Miller according to CaughtOffside. The 18-year-old midfielder has already made a major impact for the Steelmen after scoring eight goals and providing eight assists in 59 appearances in all competitions since he made his senior debut at the age of just 16 years and six days in a League Cup win against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in August 2022.

Since then, the talented youngster has progressed into the Scotland Under-21 setup, scoring two goals and providing three assists in his first five caps and there is an expectation he will be handed a maiden senior call-up over the coming months as his remarkable progression continues. Several Reds scouts are believed to have watched Miller in action over recent months - but the words of one current team-mate should tell Liverpool everything they need to know about the youngster’s attitude and ability.

Motherwell star Andy Halliday told The Daily Record earlier this season: “I always try to refrain at times from talking about it, because you don’t want younger players to get too carried away, but that’s not something I even worry about with Lennon. He’s so humble, grounded and down to earth no matter the headlines or praise that he gets. He went and scored his first goal for Scotland under-21s last week, comes in and he’s still the same boy, trains the exact same – but he is certainly right up there.

“I’ve been lucky to play with a few talented youngsters, but I look at Lennon and he’s got everything. It’s not even being a young player, I think he’s one of our best players and has been for a couple of seasons, now. I think we’ve very lucky to have him, but I’ve said this many times as well, and I think Lennon knows it, that’s he’s also very lucky to have Motherwell. Motherwell gave him the opportunity he’s had at 16 years old, he’s lucky to have a manager in Stuart Kettlewell that will just keep him in the team, give him that run of games, let him make mistakes, let him grow and get better.”

As ever with young players, getting your timing right in essential if they are to continue their progression and that time seems to be near for Miller to make the next step in his career. A move to Anfield and a step into an environment that is already helping harness several young talents could well prove to big an ideal step for the player, his new club and his country.
