Chicago Bears spread holiday cheer at annual event

CHICAGO - The Chicago Bears turned their attention from the field to local families on the South Side.
Dozens of kids and their parents were invited to the annual "Bears Bearing Gifts" event in Auburn Gresham on Wednesday.
The families were welcomed into Leo High School and treated to a catered dinner by Joe’s Seafood on white linens, photos with Santa, games, a performance by the Leo High School choir, and an opportunity to shop.
This is the 9th annual Chicago Bears Care "Bears Bearing Gifts" event held at Leo High School – this time inviting about 50 local families.
"It’s amazing that so many kids in the neighborhood be able to participate in an event like this. It’s special," said one dad named Randy.
The star of the show? Santa, of course, who shared a striking resemblance with former Chicago Bear Anthony "Spice" Adams.
The families were invited by local schools, many identified as having a tough year and just needing a little extra love.
"We are transitioning from homelessness to we just got an apartment," said one mom named Catherine. "Thank God I’m okay and my kids are okay, but we are doing really well."
"I’ve already been humbled and teary with some of the stories I’ve heard. There’s a lot of people that just need a boost," said Marge Hamm, the Director of Bears Care.
And parents got that boost on Wednesday night as they were given a moment to step into Santa’s workshop and pick out a few items. All the toys, coats, and shoes were donated by the Chicago Bears.
"This is the holiday spirit—giving back to others, sharing, having a sense of community. That’s what Leo High School is doing with the Chicago Bears Care organization," said Leo High School Principal Dr. Shaka Rawls.
