Arsenal transfer news: Mikel Arteta drops Gabriel Jesus hint as forgotten man set for return

Gabriel Jesus is set to stay at Arsenal beyond the January transfer window

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge is stalling, though the January window offers the Gunners the chance to reboot.

Mikel Arteta's men are six points adrift of leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand. Arteta had now hinted club chiefs will look to bring in reinforcements in January, despite the exit of sporting director Edu earlier this season.

A striker does not appear to be high on his list though, with the Arsenal boss confirming Gabriel Jesus will be staying at the Emirates despite dropping down the pecking order.

Given their stuttering title bid, the Gunners can be expected to be one of the busier Premier League teams next month though. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Arsenal transfer news.

Arteta drops Jesus hint

Mikel Arteta has insisted Gabriel Jesus still has a future at Arsenal. The striker has started just six games this season and scored only one goal, which came in the Carabao Cup win over Preston.

Despite dropping down the pecking order though, Arteta has ruled out an exit for the Brazilian in January. When asked if Jesus would be moving on, he said: "No, no sense. Like all strikers, they go on phases and moments and that gap is becoming big.

"It’s true that obviously a lot of things has happened, injuries, absences of not playing or starting games that much but his attitude has been really good, it always is, and we’re going to try to help him overcome the situation as soon as possible."

Arteta has also confirmed that Arsenal will be active in the January transfer window. But the Gunners boss has urged fans to be patient as he looks to boost his squad, and his side's title chances, next month.

He said: "The window gives us an opportunity to strengthen the team if we feel that is needed and we feel that we have the capacity to do that as well.

"We are on it and just have to assess the situation because it is changing every week. I’m positive that in a few weeks we’re going to be in a better place."

Forgotten man set for return

Arsenal forgotten man Marquinhos is set to return to the Emirates at the end of his loan to Fluminense. The forward joined the Brazilian side in February, with the deal containing an option to buy clause.

Fluminense’s league campaign came to an end over the weekend, with Marquinhos having seen his role decrease over the course of his loan. And he has now signaled his time in Brazil is at an end.

“A year of evolution and great personal and professional learning,” Marquinhos said. “It was an honor for me to wear this shirt, at Fluminense. Head on to the new challenges ahead!”
