Roger Goodell Makes NFL’s Stance on Jay-Z Unmistakably Clear Amid Rape Allegations

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell addressed an issue hanging over the league’s head this week regarding pop star Jay-Z.

Per an Associated Press report, Jay-Z was accused of participating in a sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in 2000. Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Corey Carter, claims the allegation is not true and a part of an extortion attempt for money.

“Jay-Z says a rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt,” wrote Phillip Marcello with the AP. “A woman who previously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs, alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 when she was 13, amended the lawsuit Sunday to include a new allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault.”

One of Jay-Z’s companies, Roc Nation, released a statement calling the allegations “idiotic” among other things.

Roc Nation partners with the NFL for social justice causes and to help put on the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Amid the allegations, media were curious how the league would respond to the allegations surrounding Jay-Z.

“We are aware of the civil allegations and Jay Z’s really strong response to that,” Goodell said. “We know obviously that litigation is happening. But from our standpoint, our relationship is not changing with them, including our preparations for the next Super Bowl.”

Goodell further explained the relationship between the NFL and Roc Nation.

“I think they’re getting incredibly comfortable with not just the Super Bowl but other events that they have advised us on and helped us with,” Goodell said. “They’ve been helpful in the social justice area to us on many occasions. They’ve been great partners that have provided a lot of value to us.”
