Troy Deeney is right to rub salt in West Ham wounds after suggesting that Aston Villa star Jhon Duran is now worth £80million.

The Colombia international scored again for the Villans on Tuesday (10 November), helping to secure a 3-2 Champions League win against RB Leipzig.

This was his ninth goal of the campaign, despite making just three starts under Unai Emery, which has led to rave reviews from Villa supporters and beyond.

Pondering how much the 20-year-old is now worth on talkSPORT on 12 December, Deeney suggested: “anywhere between £70m to 80m.”

This just goes to show how much of a mistake the Hammers made in the summer window in not signing the young striker.

It is common knowledge that the ex-Chicago Fire man was wanted at the London Stadium in the last transfer window without a move ever coming off.

This saw the former Watford striker ask: “Was he close to going to West Ham, £35million I think they wanted in the summer?”

Andy Goldstein replied sharply: “Yeah, they wouldn’t pay the extra four (million), I think it was.”

Given that the Irons went on to sign Niclas Fullkrug instead, it is just evidence of how much is still wrong with the recruitment at the London Stadium.

Given that Duran has signed a new deal with the Villans, a deal with the Hammers is now firmly off the table and his new perceived value will be frustrating for the Irons’ hierarchy to hear.

Regardless, it is right for Deeney to rub salt in the wounds in a deal that West Ham has to learn from.
