‘I will say this’: Weston McKennie makes honest admission about his time at Leeds after scoring last night

Former Leeds United midfielder Weston McKennie finally showed his talent to English football fans with a goal for Juventus in the Champions League against Manchester City.

McKennie came off the bench to score for Juve in a 2-0 win against the English champions as he volleyed home US compatriot Timothy Weah’s cross from inside the area.

It is now almost two years since McKennie left Juventus to join Leeds on loan, one of the many times he has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Italian club.

However, on each occasion McKennie has somehow managed to force his way back into the club’s plans, including after such a dismal stint at Elland Road.

McKennie’s Dad John recently claimed he did not see his time at Leeds as a failure, but he will know deep down he did not show anywhere near enough.

McKennie on time at Leeds after Juventus goal

McKennie as admitted himself he let Leeds supporters down with his performances, which is probably why he has worked so hard to force his way back in at Juve.

In fact, McKennie even claimed his fitness levels were not up to scratch while in England, something Leeds fans always thought was the case anyway.

But McKennie’s goal against Manchester City is indicative of the turnaround in his career he has had since his time in West Yorkshire, but Micah Richards wanted to take him back to that time in a post-match interview on CBS Sports.

Richards being from Leeds himself asked McKennie what he thought of his time at the club and in the city. While praising those at Elland Road, it is clear he didn’t settle at all off the pitch.

He said: “Okay I will say this, Leeds as a club, the people within the club I liked. The city itself and the surroundings was a little bit hard. It was always grey, I had a sunlight window in my house and there was never any sun coming through.

“No Sunday roast, no nothing. I was alone. My area was like no area, nothing around. I went up to see Harry Potter world which was like an hour away. That’s it, that’s all I did, and golf.”

What McKennie’s Dad recently said about Leeds spell

McKennie’s Dad only got the opportunity to see his son play at Elland Road once, and he could not have picked a more toxic game.

John attended Leeds’ final game of the season at home to Tottenham Hotspur, the day in which they were finally officially relegated.

Leeds supporters turned on many of the players who were out on the field that day, with McKennie very much among them after his substitution in the second half.

Despite that, John recently insisted McKennie did not see his experience as ‘negative’, though the same cannot be said for him.

He said: “He didn’t see it as a negative experience, like us, but as an opportunity for growth.”
