FPL GW16 Tips & Preview

1. Cole Palmer

Palmer this season has proved that he is not just a one-season wonder. I’m not sure if many people had that thought or opinion about him but it is a legitimate one. We have seen many players come and go before but Cole Palmer is a world class talent.

He now has 4 goals and 2 assists in his last three fixtures and has an exceptional upcoming fixture run of Brentford (Home), Everton (Away), Fulham (Home), Ipswich (Away), Crystal Palace (Away), Bournemouth (Home), Wolves (Home).

Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures

Not only is he a great asset to own for this run, there are many potential captaincy opportunities. With Chelsea’s free flowing style of play and attacking pedigree this season (1st for xG, 1st for Goals For), he should be in the captaincy conversation in most weeks.

His ability to score goals as well as assist his teammates gives him the flexibility to score points in any given fixture and also boosts his bonus points earning ability. Also don’t forget that he has scored his last 10+ penalties in a row for a team that is sure to draw more of them due to their direct attacking style in the box.

2. Bryan Mbeumo Plans

Bryan Mbeumo has been on many FPL manager’s minds this season as he has been one of the top performing assets at different times. He was also a hot topic in recent weeks as his form fell off a cliff. Before Gameweek 15, he had 1 shot in the previous five Gameweeks and was not providing much on the creative front either.

These above stats made him an easy sell but his goal and assist against Newcastle on the weekend have made many managers question if they should still sell him. The answer is yes.

Brentford’s best form has come at home this season. 26 of their 31 goals have come at home and their upcoming home games include Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, Manchester City & Liverpool. The upside for Mbeumo is no longer there at his current price for the next period. He will likely be a valuable asset again at some point this season, but there are better alternatives in the mid-priced midfielder or forward brackets to spend your transfer funds on.

3. Ollie Watkins

Ollie Watkins has shown strong form this season with 7 goals and 3 assists to his name, including taking a penalty in Gameweek 14. This is in spite of Aston Villa struggling to produce the same results as last season.

Villa now face a fixture run of Nottingham Forest (Away), Manchester City (Home), Newcastle (Away) with Everton and Arsenal away fixtures not long after that. Not a great run for any forward or midfielder.

It has been reported that Watkins has picked up a knock in their midweek Champions League fixture and with Duran waiting in the wings, we could once again see a benching for Watkins if he is unable to start. Watkins not playing the full 90 minutes in many fixtures this season is also concerning as he and Aston Villa try to juggle Premier League and Champions League commitments.

Many goals are scored in the later stages of Premier league fixtures so there is value being lost by being substituted. I believe in the next run of fixtures that there are better value options available than Watkins.

4. GW16 Key Fixture Analysis

Arsenal v Everton:

Arsenal host Everton in what is expected to be a one-sided affair. Arsenal are undefeated at home this season and have scored 2+ goals in each game where they did not receive a red card. Saka has 9 returns in 7 fixtures with his best form coming in the more recent fixtures.

The addition of Jurrien Timber at RB and the return of Martin Odegaard in midfield has unlocked Arsenal’s attack once again and the right side of their forward play specifically. It is now much harder for teams to double team and focus on Saka solely which allows him to get into greater attacking positions.

Arsenal have seen great success with 5-1, 4-0 and 2-1 victories in recent times against Everton at the Emirates. Saka is a definite captaincy shout for Gameweek 16.

Liverpool v Fulham:

Liverpool host Fulham at Anfield in what could be a tough matchup for Slot and his men. Fulham have only conceded 7 goals in 7 away fixtures and their underlying stats show that this was not luck based but earned. With Bernd Leno in goal who is a great shot stopper, you can see why they can be hard to break down.

Fulham haven’t had the easiest run either, with away fixtures such as Manchester United, Manchester City & Tottenham in their list of results.

Although Salah’s form has been exceptional this season, especially at Anfield, it is definitely worth considering your options this week as most of the premium assets have rather easy home fixtures on paper. The counter argument to this is that Fulham will be without their first choice center backs- Bassey(suspended) and Andersen(Injured and Likely ruled out) which tempts you towards a Salah captaincy. So it is definitely a close call to make.
