Josh Acheampong close to new Chelsea deal

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong is now on the verge of signing a contract extension at the club.

The 18-year-old defender, who’s a product of the Blues academy, has been frozen out recently amid a contract stand-off. Thankfully, the Englishman is now set to commit his long-term future in west London.

Romano has explained via his YouTube channel that Chelsea have changed Acheampong’s mind because initially he didn’t want to sign a new deal, but the final details are now being sorted for the contract extension.

“One of the players they want to keep for the future project is for sure the full-back Josh Acheampong,” Romano said.

“In a very particular and strange situation, Chelsea wants the player to commit to signing a new deal and stay at the club to be part of the long-term project. So far, Acheampong has had some changes around him in terms of camp in the recent months, he never wanted to sign a new deal at Chelsea because of the pathway, because he had several other possibilities around the world in terms of projects and proposals, not only in England but in other countries.

Josh Acheampong will start on Thursday

It’s fantastic to see that Acheampong is now back and available for selection.

Chelsea have travelled with a 20-man squad to Kazakstan to face Astana in the Conference League group stages, which includes an entire host of youngsters. Acheampong is one of the academy talents included on the trip ahead of Thursday afternoon’s European match.

Maresca says Chelsea’s Acheampong will start versus Astana, which would be confirmation that he’s been fully integrated back into the group. Also, he mentioned that the right-back is close to signing a new deal.
