‘Keeps surprising us’: Mikel Arteta says he’s always shocked by how good one Arsenal player is

Arsenal secured another brilliant win in the Champions League on Wednesday evening as they beat Monaco 3-0.

The Gunners are now third in the table in the Champions League, and they’re very much on course to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Bukayo Saka received plenty of praise for his performance on Wednesday, but the star of the show may well have been Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The 18-year-old slotted into this Arsenal team at left-back with ease, and Lewis-Skelly earned plaudits for this performance.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Mikel Arteta has hailed Lewis-Skelly, stating that the youngster keeps surprising him as a player.

Mikel Arteta surprised by Myles Lewis-Skelly

The Arsenal boss spoke about Lewis-Skelly and why he’s been shocked by the youngster.

Arteta says that Lewis-Skelly is showing his quality every single day and that he’s very proud to see him performing at this level now.

“I think everyone knew about his levels, but his adaptations to the Champions League going up that level, have you been at all surprised how quickly he’s made his mark at this level?” Arteta was asked.

“Well, he keeps surprising us, but that’s what he wants to do. That’s the quality he has, that’s the ambition that he’s acting and preparing himself every single day. So I’m not surprised, but it’s very difficult to do what he’s doing,’ Arteta said.

“Well, a really proud moment. He’s one of our own, 18 years old. He makes his starting debut in the Champions League.

“And it’s just a joy to watch him, you know. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to give a chance to somebody. So he starts to change his career.”

Myles Lewis-Skelly stats vs Monaco

Lewis-Skelly wasn’t necessarily electric against Monaco, but this was one of the most confident and assured performances from an 18-year-old we’ve seen for a long time.

Indeed, the teenager wasn’t afraid to try things and stretch himself as he looked to drive his team forwards.

Pass success rate 95.7%

Tackles 1

This wasn’t the most dazzling performance in terms of goals, assists and creativity, but Lewis-Skelly barely put a foot wrong.

His pass success rate was almost impeccable, and when he had the chance to advance the ball by dribbling, he took it.

This young man showed on Wednesday evening that he’s up to the challenge of becoming a first-team player at Arsenal, and it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if we see him in the starting XI more often going forwards.

Mikel Arteta may have uncovered another young gem at Arsenal after helping Bukayo Saka become a world-class player over the past few years.
