Jamie Carragher has revealed Liverpool’s response after he tried to get inside information on the contract situations of Mohamed Salah and co.
By now, all Reds fans are aware that the club is now under pressure to secure the contracts of star players Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
All three players enter the final six months of their current deals in January, at which point they would be free to negotiate with overseas clubs.
However, Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy indicates that both Salah and Van Dijk have no intention of speaking to foreign clubs in January, with the anticipation being that both will remain at Liverpool next season.
The most doubt has been cast onto Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose lofty words about potentially winning the Ballon D’or sparking a fresh wave of rumours.
All three players have reportedly received preliminary offers from the club.
Virgil van Dijk is already believed to have rejected the opening offer, but it’s indicated this shouldn’t cause concern as it’s part of standard negotiating practice.
The Dutch center-back is reportedly both willing and ready to extend his stay at Anfield.
And now Carragher has revealed his attempts to get information on Mohamed Salah’s contract renewal.
What did Jamie Carragher say?
The Liverpool legend made himself unpopular in the dressing room after labelling the Egyptian as ‘selfish’ for bringing contract talk into the public sphere.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, the Sky Sports pundit revealed that Liverpool were keeping a lid on all talks with Mohamed Salah and their star players:
“Me personally, I think he should stay on the same money, and give him a two-year deal,” Carragher said.
“Now, the club might be offering him one he might want three, I don’t know what it is, and I’ve tried to get information from the club, I’ll be honest with you, because I knew I was going to get asked about it.”
“But the club are not giving anything,” Carragher explained.
Under Michael Edwards, it is normal for Liverpool to move in silence and let the results or actions speak for themselves.
And although we have heard precious little on the contract front with just under three weeks to go until the January window, there is no doubt conversations going on behind the scenes.
The likes of Virgil van Dijk have also shut down any contract talk in the media, so it seems a situation where we will just have to be patient and hope the right outcome is reached.
