[Newcastle United](https://cominghomenewcastle.sbnation.com)’s Callum Wilson has suffered a significant setback in his attempt to return to the pitch on a steady basis as he’s expected to miss at least the next two months due to a new hamstring injury.
As reported by [Craig Hope of the Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-14183263/Newcastle-Callum-Wilson-hamstring-injury.html), Wilson, who just returned from a four-month layoff, sustained the new injury during Saturday’s 4–2 defeat at Brentford.
The 32-year-old experienced tightness in his hamstring after a brief 17-minute appearance, with scans revealing a strain serious enough to sideline him until at least mid-February and will nothing but seal his fate in Tyneside with the striker entering free agency next July.
First and foremost, the injury is a blow to Eddie Howe’s rotation, especially with Wilson expected to play a key role in coming off the pine in relief of Alexander Isak.
Instead, Newcastle will now navigate a busy schedule without their veteran forward for a stretch that includes at least 11 matches, potentially more if Newcastle advances—as expected—in the Carabao Cup.
Wilson’s injury will also impact Newcastle’s transfer plans and their PSR balancing as he is no longer available for a January transfer. That means he will leave for free in the summer or sign an extension with NUFC, none of those options moving PSR issues into the black.
When it comes to the transfer targets for the upcoming winter window, Hope reported that the focus remains on adding a right-sided forward and potentially a right-sided centre-back, and that there is no intention of signing a through-and-through striker following this news.
Hope also reported that there si “considerable sympathy” for Wilson within Newcastle’s board and staff, which might mean an extension is coming his way, though his limited availability is simply too bad to have this old lad around for longer.
It was good while it lasted, Callum. Good luck rehabbing from this latest one!
