Measuring success, Newcastle United up against any other Premier League team.
How do we gauge it?
Which Premier League team is outperforming a rival?
For Newcastle United and the rest, it surely comes down to what it always does.
How many matches you are winning AND how many you are losing.
So I have had a look at all 20 Premier League clubs this season.
After four months of the 2024/25 season, this is how many matches each Premier League team has won and lost, in Premier League AND domestic cup competition (as at 12 December 2024):
13 and 1 Liverpool
10 and 2 Arsenal
10 and 3 Chelsea
9 and 5 Man City
8 and 4 Brighton
8 and 5 Newcastle United
8 and 5 Villa
8 and 6 Brentford
8 and 7 Tottenham
7 and 5 Forest
7 and 5 Bournemouth
7 and 5 Fulham
7 and 6 Man U
6 and 7 West Ham
5 and 6 Palace
5 and 8 Leicester
4 and 7 Everton
4 and 12 Southampton
3 and 11 Wolves
1 and 9 Ipswich
As you can see above, when it comes to domestic competitions this season, Newcastle United are joint sixth most successful with Aston Villa, when it comes to winning and losing.
Now just imagine if this weekend, Newcastle defeat Leicester, Brighton fail to beat Palace, plus Man City lose to Man U.
In terms of winning and losing this season, that would make Newcastle United the fourth most successful so far in 2024/25, only behind Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal…
Try and get your head around that!
