Virgil van Dijk says Steven Gerrard was an even better player than World Cup winning Real Madrid icon

Virgil van Dijk is back to his best for Liverpool as they lead the way in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

The Dutchman has been an ever-present in both competitions and hasn’t let the speculation surrounding his future affect his form on the pitch.

Van Dijk rejected an opening contract offer from Liverpool but remains in talks with the club as they aim for a resolution.

And the Liverpool skipper has just picked who he thinks was the better player between Steven Gerrard and Toni Kroos.

Not much needs to be said about Gerrard as he was one of the most gifted midfielders of his generation and played a big role for club and country over the course of his decorated career.

Trent Alexander-Arnold recently named Gerrard as his idol and that’s not surprising in the slightest as any young Scouser aspiring to be a footballer held the former midfielder in high regard.

Kroos, on the other hand, was also one of the best midfielders of his generation as he called time on his playing career at the end of last season after representing Germany at Euro 2024.

When asked to choose between the two players, Van Dijk showed no hesitation in preferring the former Liverpool captain, as seen below in the video.

Gerrard didn’t win as many trophies as Kroos but enjoyed a successful career in his own right as he won nine trophies at Anfield between 1998 and 2015.

After spending the twilight years of his career with LA Galaxy in the MLS, he moved into management as he finds himself in charge of Al Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.

Former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum is currently his club captain and the likes of Fabinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane also ply their trade in the Middle East, so there is a bit of a Liverpool reunion in that part of the world.
