The first night of one of the most exciting weeks of the 2024 NFL season kicks off with an NFC West matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers tonight on Thursday Night Football. While neither of these teams holds the top spot in the NFC West (that’s Seattle at 8-5), it’s the closest division in football, with just two games separating the first place Seahawks from the last place 49ers (6-7).
After starting the season 1-4, the Rams have won six of their last eight, and are coming off a massive 44-42 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Week 14. That marked the highest-scoring game in the NFL this season, and the 7-6 Rams sit just outside the playoff picture in the NFC (Washington currently holds the seven seed at 8-5).
In Week 14 the San Francisco 49ers found the perfect cure to a three-game losing streak: facing off against the 2024 Chicago Bears. The 49ers demolished the Bears 38-13, which marked a season high in points and a 25-point victory after San Francisco had lost their previous two games by 25+ points. The 49ers have made it at least as far as the NFC Championship game in four of the past five years, but in this injury-riddled season, they looking to make a late playoff push and avoid missing the postseason for the first time since 2020 .
Thursday Night Football this week is the start of an electric weekend in the NFL, including four matchups where both teams have winning records. Thanks to matchups between the Bills (10-3) and Lions (12-1), and Steelers (10-3) and Eagles (11-2), it’s the first time since Week 15 of the 1985 season that there were two games in the same week between 10-win teams in Week 15 or earlier of a season.
