Chelsea winger Jadon Sancho has shared what their squad feels about a potential Premier League title challenge. He brushed aside talk of them being in the title race, explaining that they haven't achieved anything yet.
The Blues finished 12th and sixth, respectively, in the last two seasons in the Premier League. However, they have seen a massive improvement since Enzo Maresca's appointment as manager in the summer. They are second in the league table, just four points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
While many believe the west London side can also be considered part of the title race, many have dismissed such an idea. Jadon Sancho recently shared what the squad feels about talks of a title challenge, saying (via Chelsea.News):
“Nah, but that’s what all the guys are saying to each other, like we haven’t done anything yet.”
Manager Enzo Maresca also dialed down expectations of a title challenge after their 4-3 win at rivals Tottenham Hotspur on December 8.
“The main focus has to be to enjoy the day off and when we come back train well, go for the game," he said (via The Guardian). "The fans can dream because from the outside it is quite clear and inside the reality is we are not ready. The important thing is we improve day by day.”
The Blues have won five Premier League titles, with the last one coming in the 2016-17 season.
Pundit explains why Jadon Sancho is doing well at Chelsea after his Manchester United struggles
Jadon Sancho joined Chelsea on loan from Manchester United in the summer and has contributed two goals and five assists in 11 appearances across competitions this season. He had fallen out with former United manager Erik ten Hag last season and also spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre believes Sancho is excelling at Chelsea because he is willing to put in the hard work.
"Jadon Sancho is playing with a smile on his face at Chelsea and he’s shown he can be a big asset after being loaned out by Manchester United," Silvestre said (via Metro). "He is positive again and has the belief of his coaches, he has competition but he is standing out. He may have not fit in at United under Ruben Amorim because he plays with the wing-back system."
"Sancho is willing to work hard at Chelsea which wasn’t what he was prepared to do at United – he will be a bargain for them if they sign him on a permanent deal for around £25million," he added.
Sancho joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for a reported fee of £73 million. He contributed just 12 goals and six assists in 83 appearances across competitions for them.
The Blues notably have an obligation to buy in his loan deal worth between £20-25 million for the summer.
