‘The worst’ – Italian newspapers critical of Manchester City duo after CL defeat to Juventus

Manchester City extended their poor run by suffering a 2-0 defeat to Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Dušan Vlahović and Weston McKennie scoring second half goals saw Juventus secure three points at home.

Manchester City dominated possession but had two fewer shots on target than Juve.

Thursday’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport has named Jack Grealish as ‘the worst’ player for Manchester City yesterday. The 29-year-old England international was replaced by Matheus Nunes in the 87th minute.

The Italian newspaper gave him the lowest rating of 5/10, which was also given to Erling Haaland and Joško Gvardiol.

When describing Grealish’s performance against the Serie A side, Gazzetta say: ‘He starts as a midfielder and doesn’t seem to be too comfortable. Out of position and removed from the game, City also pay for their bad day.’

Both Kevin De Bruyne and İlkay Gündoğan got 6/10, the highest among Manchester City players. The remaining six players, Ederson, Rúben Dias, Kyle Walker, Rico Lewis, Jérémy Doku and Bernardo Silva were all rated 5.5/10.

Another Italian newspaper, Corriere dello Sport, say Haaland was ‘the worst’ against the Old Lady and gave him 4/10. It’s the lowest and the same rating was given to De Bruyne. The second lowest was 4.5/10, given to Grealish, Ederson and Gvardiol.

On Haaland, Correire say: ‘He is the number one danger but for half an hour he doesn’t touch a lot of balls. He suddenly appears at the end of the first half: a left-footed shot blocked and a lob devoured in front of the goal then disappears.’

Walker got 5/10, Doku 5.5/10, Dias and Silva were rated 6/10, and Gündoğan and Lewis got the highest rating of 6.5/10.

Manchester City are currently in 22nd spot with eight points from six matches.
