Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Van Dijk are all out of contract next summer
Trent Alexander-Arnold won’t be seen in such an undying light by fans as his fellow Liverpool stars when it comes to their expiring contracts, claims Jamie Carragher.
Local star Alexander-Arnold, Reds talisman Mohamed Salah and club captain Virgil van Dijk all see their current deals expire in the summer of 2025 at the minute, with negotiations yet to progress.
Yet, where Salah – who recently admitted he was ‘more out than in’ in a telling statement – and Van Dijk were brought to Merseyside, versatile defender Alexander-Arnold roots are there, having been born in West Derby.
Rumours suggesting that European heavyweights Real Madrid regard the Liverpudlian highly may well be turning Alexander-Arnold’s head. But, unlike his peers, should his current contractual situation turn sour, Carragher fears that niceties will be thrown out the window.

“There’s no doubt for me that Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah will be treated differently than Trent Alexander-Arnold,” Carragher admitted, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.
“When you think about it, Mo Salah is on £350-£400 grand a week – Liverpool signed him for £40 million. Trent is probably on half that money, and he cost nothing, but there is no banner in the Kop saying, ‘give Trent his doll’, and there never will be one.”
This comment comes in the wake of Reds fans flying a banner from Anfield’s famed Kop last month that read: “He fires a bow. Now give Mo his dough”, suggesting that their club’s owners extend Salah’s current lucrative deal.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool contract expires in 2025 and he has been linked with Real Madrid
“I look at when Michael Owen left to go to Real Madrid, Steve McManaman did the same and not thought of the same,” Carragher added. “Because when you’re a local player – you’re almost seen as if you should be almost grateful to play for the club. ‘This is your club – who do you think you are almost type of thing’.”
The Bernabeu, like Owen and McManaman, is Alexander-Arnold’s proposed destination, as The Telegraph reports that Los Blancos, who have long held an interest in the defender, will look to poach him on a free transfer next summer – in a similar fashion to how they secured the services of Kylian Mbappe from PSG this year.
“The Trent thing will start kicking off,” Carragher concluded. “I can assure you it won’t be fans saying, ‘give him what he wants’, it will be, ‘who does he think he is’.”
