Southampton transfer target suffered a huge setback this week

Southampton transfer target Kwame Poku has suffered a huge injury setback this week. Is it time for the Saints to reconsider?

With the January transfer window moving closer and closer, it is clear that Southampton need to make improvements to their squad in the new year. Russell Martin simply cannot continue the way he is playing, sure, but he also needs reinforcements, to be fair to him.

Last month, Southampton were linked with the signing of Peterborough United standout attacker, Kwame Poku. The links were made after an incredible start to the season for the Posh attacker but now, the Saints must reconsider.

As highlighted by BBC Sport this week, Kwame Poku is facing around three months on the injury treatment table. This comes after the standout scorer underwent surgery to address his hamstring injury.

Now, Southampton must reconsider. There is not much point in signing a player in January who would not be able to play for at least two more months. While it would be a very "Southampton transfer", let's avoid the confusion, please.

There were already question marks about Poku making the step up from the third division to the first. While he is obviously an excellent player with great potential, the Premier League is a different kettle of fish to League One.

Southampton are not in a position where they can afford to take gambles in the January transfer window. Unfortunately, by doing so, it would send out the message that the Saints are preparing for life in the Championship next season.

Instead, Southampton will hopefully be positive in their transfer approach. Let's cross our fingers that the Southampton owners envision next season being played in the Premier League, rather than back in the Championship. A tough ask, sure...
