Ex-Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes is on Tottenham's radar and discussions with his representatives have taken place ahead of a possible move next summer, it has been claimed.

Gomes, 24, has caught the eye since leaving United in 2020. The midfielder had a short spell on loan in Portugal with Boavista before then becoming a mainstay at Lille in Ligue 1. In fact, Gomes has totted-up 129 appearances over the past three and a bit years and he even made his England senior debut in September.

But Gomes could now be set to leave Lille. He has just over six months left on his contract with the French club and it has been reported that his camp is in negotiations with Tottenham, as per TBR Football. Alongside Gomes, his Lille teammate Jonathan David is also on Spurs' agenda as he approaches the end of his deal.

Gomes and David are both allowed to speak to sides outside France from January ahead of agreeing a pre-contract for the summer transfer window. Tottenham could be the beneficiary of signing two talented players for nothing as Ange Postecoglou tries to bolster his squad at the end of the season.

Gomes joined United in 2006, aged six, and he progressed through the youth system at Carrington. In May 2017, Gomes became the youngest player to represent United since Duncan Edwards in 1953 when he came on during their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. Six months later, Gomes signed his first professional contract.

However, Gomes struggled for many more first-team opportunities - and he left at the end of the 2019/20 season having made just 10 senior appearances. He signed a five-year deal with Lille and immediately went out on loan to Boavista, where he played 32 matches and scored six goals.

Addressing his United exit in 2021, Gomes said: "There was a contract there that was on the table for me to sign. Everyone always says I left for money which, for me, makes no sense.

"It was more to do with the pathway and the opportunity that Lille were bringing. It was a big step, and I knew it was going to be one."

Having impressed under Lee Carsley for England this autumn and with his contract winding down, there has been increased speculation over Gomes' future. As well as Tottenham, a whole host of other Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for the talented midfielder - including United.

And Gomes appeared to hint at liking the idea of returning to Old Trafford in September. "There'll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it'd be difficult to say no," he said about returning, but Gomes then added: "As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad, I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all."
