The offseason is always a wild time when it comes to programs finding their new head coach. There is always a few decisions made that either are really surprising or just make you wonder what that program is thinking. And on Wednesday, both of those things happened when North Carolina officially announced that they will be hiring former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick as their next head coach.
This move really doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Belichick is already in his 70s, so it's unlikely that he will work this job for very long. Also, even though he is considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, who knows if he will be able to find similar success at the college level.
But regardless of all of that, Georgia fans should be happy because Belichick's hiring means that current Georgia football Defensive Coordinator Glenn Schumann isn't going anywhere.
Schumann was rumored to be one of the top candidates for North Carolina's opening before Belichick came into the picture, and according to Pete Nakos with On3, he interviewed twice for the position and really impressed the Tar Heels.
Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann met with North Carolina twice during its head coaching process, a source tells @On3sports. Tar Heels walked away impressed.
He was a serious candidate for the Philadelphia Eagles DC job in 2023, too. https://t.co/Piw8LxIDh6 pic.twitter.com/LD7dGF6fN7

This will not be the last position that Schumman will be linked with this offseason. He likely would be one of the top candidates for any open position if he shows interest himself.
Now we may not here of many more rumors for a few weeks now, and there is no chance Schumann leaves before Georgia's College Football Playoff run is complete, but Schumann departing the program this offseason would not be a surprise.
But he has more than earned the right to have a chance to take over a program and be a head coach somewhere else. His resume at Georgia is very strong, and now includes helping develop Jalon Walker into the 2024 Butkus Award winner. So while it would be sad to see him go, it also would be very exciting to watch him become the head coach of his own program where all Georgia fans know he would find a lot of success.
