Shaun Goater has been appointed as interim manager of Aston Villa Women.
The former Manchester City and Bermuda striker initially joined Villa as assistant head coach in August but was promoted to the top job on a temporary basis on Wednesday, when head coach Robert de Pauw was sacked after allegedly making unprofessional remarks to players, including comments about their appearance.
Villa announced that the Dutchman had departed with immediate effect after just six months at the helm, with his exit arriving three days after the Villans were trounced 4-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday, their fifth loss in nine Women's Super League matches.
“Aston Villa Women can confirm that manager Robert de Pauw has left the club with immediate effect,” read a club statement.
“The 43-year-old was appointed ahead of the 2024-25 season having previously held managerial roles at FC Twente and Bayer Leverkusen.
“We would like to thank Robert for his commitment during his time in charge and wish him well for the future.
“Shaun Goater will be in charge until a new manager is appointed and will be supported by the wider coaching team.”
Prior to joining Villa Goater worked as an assistant to Manchester City Women’s head coach Gareth Taylor from April 2023 until June this year.
The 54-year-old, who scored 84 goals in 184 league appearances for Manchester City, will preside over his first league match in charge when Villa host West Ham in their final league game of the year on Sunday.
Villa have endured a poor start to this season and find themselves fourth from bottom, one point above last-placed Crystal Palace, with just one win under their belt.
