Robert Saleh Urged to Take High-Profile Coaching Job in NFL

The San Francisco 49ers' recent struggles have prompted analysts to suggest major changes for the 2025 season, and one idea has quickly gained traction. Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is being called the solution to the 49ers' defensive issues.

ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell has laid out a blueprint for revitalizing San Francisco in 2025, with Saleh as a centerpiece.

Saleh, who served as the 49ers' defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, led the defense to elite status, including a Super Bowl LIV appearance against the Kansas City Chiefs. His schemes were instrumental in maximizing stars like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner. Despite an underwhelming 20-36 record as Jets head coach, Saleh's defensive prowess remains unquestioned.

Barnwell emphasized why Saleh's return could work.

"With how much the 49ers are spending elsewhere, they're going to need to have spots in their starting lineup and in key depth roles for rookie-deal players and modestly paid veterans," Barnwell wrote. "I'd trust Saleh to help pick the right guys for those spots and get them playing well on Sundays."

The 49ers, currently 6-7, have failed to find consistency on defense this season. While Saleh is currently assisting his close friend and Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur as an offensive consultant, Barnwell's long-term vision for the 49ers includes Saleh returning to lead a revamped defense in 2025.

"If there's an elite defensive coordinator available and no questions about how he would fit with this group of players, that's a chance San Francisco has to take," Barnwell added, underscoring Saleh's proven ability to elevate the 49ers' defense.

Saleh has yet to comment on his future coaching status in 2025, but a potential reunion could reignite the dominance San Francisco enjoyed during his tenure. As the 49ers look toward next season, the idea of bringing Saleh back is already generating intrigue.
