Serie A giants Juventus are reportedly interested in signing 24-year-old Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, but his €9 million-a-year wages will complicate matters.
According to a report by Italian outlet Juve Live, Sandro Tonali is the subject of interest from Juventus. The Serie A giants are scouring the market for a midfielder ahead of the two transfer windows next year. However, the Newcastle United midfield mainstay’s €9 million-a-year wages will complicate matters. In addition, the Bianconeri will face stiff competition from AC Milan.
Sandro Tonali and a rollercoaster ride in England
Sandro Tonali has been a dependable performer since joining Newcastle United from AC Milan in a deal worth an initial €60 million in July 2023. The young midfielder was a reluctant mover as he wanted to remain with the Rossoneri. However, apart from a betting ban, he has not looked back during his spell with Newcastle United.
The 24-year-old served a sizeable ban for breaching anti-betting regulations but has come back with a bang this season. Tonali has turned out 27 times thus far for Newcastle United while chipping in with one goal and two assists.
The Italian midfielder’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. A return to Serie A might be on the cards for the Newcastle United midfielder next year, with AC Milan and Juventus among his prospective suitors.
Serie A return on the horizon?
Recent reports have linked Sandro Tonali with a fairytale return to AC Milan. The Rossoneri will dip into the market for a midfielder next year amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Ismael Bennacer. So, the Newcastle United midfield mainstay has emerged as a viable target for AC Milan.
As for Juventus, Douglas Luiz has failed to hit the ground running since arriving from Aston Villa in the summer transfer window, while Nicolo Fagioli has not made his mark. So, both midfielders face an uncertain future at Juventus, with recent reports linking them with Premier League clubs. However, while Tonali is a viable target, his €9 million-a-year wages will complicate matters for his suitors.
AC Milan and Juventus do not have the financial leeway to afford Tonali’s €9 million-a-year wages. In addition, Newcastle United will likely demand a premium to part ways with the 24-year-old Italian international. So, a loan move will be the only avenue for the two Serie A clubs.
