Gerard Pique reveals who his favorite current Barcelona player is

There are many legends of the game who have played for FC Barcelona at some point in their careers. Many have enjoyed a lot of success, while others may have left the club feeling like they could have accomplished more. However, very few legends of Barcelona can claim to have a bigger list of accomplishments than Gerard Pique.

Once the guardian of the golden age at the club, the Spanish centre-back went from Manchester to Barcelona but could not stop himself from winning the biggest prizes everywhere he went. Having won the UEFA Champions League with both teams, as well as having a lot of success with Spain, the player has enjoyed a great career.

Now retired and no longer active, Pique still remains an avid enjoyer of the sport and can regularly be spotted at various Barcelona fixtures. However, in a recent interview, as highlighted by Barca Times, the former legend of the club revealed who his current favorite player in the active team is:

“Everyone will say Lamine, but for me it’s Cubarsí.”

While some may think it’s simply a choice that Pique would have made to stand out, it does make sense given that he was a centre-back himself during his playing days. Moreover, having come out of La Masia himself, Pique might just resonate with the story of another aspiring defender who emerged from the Barcelona youth academy.

Even beyond just the story itself, 17-year-old Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Pique share stylistic similarities as well. Beyond just being solid natural defenders, they both possessed elite technical abilities and composure under pressure. In a way, they were both the initiators of the team’s possessional game-plan from the back to the front of the pitch.
