New date for Everton vs Liverpool revealed - but Premier League need UEFA approval

Mohamed Salah

Everton's home game with Liverpool was postponed on Saturday

The last Merseyside derby to be played at Goodison Park has been pencilled in for Tuesday 11 February.

Everton's home clash with Liverpool was postponed last Saturday due to Storm Darragh. Both clubs are now in talks with the Premier League, police and broadcasters over rearranging the historic fixture.

Premier League rules state that postponed fixtures should be rescheduled for the next available midweek slot, with options limited by Liverpool's success in cup competitions. Arne Slot's side face Southampton in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals next week and if they get through to the last four they will not have a free midweek until February.

Liverpool's 100 per cent start to the Champions League means they are on the brink of automatic qualification for the last 16, creating space in the fixture list for a Premier League game when the play-offs are held at the start of February. The Premier League need approval from UEFA to stage a top-flight match on a Champions League date, but that will not be a problem.

TNT Sports hold the UK TV rights for the Merseyside derby and the Champions League play-offs, but have given their blessing to Everton v Liverpool taking place that week.

Amazon Prime have the first pick of Champions League Tuesday fixtures, with TNT showing the rest, so would also be impacted by any clash with the Mersyside derby.

The Premier League will confirm the new date after next week's Carabao Cup quarter-finals and once Liverpool are mathematically certain of their Champions League last 16 place. Slot's side face Lille and PSV Eindhoven in their last two Champions League group games next month needing only a draw to book their spot in the knockout stage.

A shock defeat to Southampton next week could see the Merseyside derby scheduled for one of the two Carabao semi-final weeks in January. The Premier League declined to comment.
