'Fair play': Paul Merson says Arsenal have three young players in their ranks who are truly outstanding

Arsenal are in a great place at the minute, showing why they are among the favourites to win the Premier League title and the Champions League.

The Gunners have gone from a mediocre outfit struggling to even reach the top four to an exciting squad regularly competing for the highest honours.

Arsenal have also done incredibly well on the academy front, bringing in a host of players who look like they have a very bright future at the Emirates Stadium.

Highbury legend Paul Merson has now waxed lyrical about three Arsenal gems who everyone at N5 should be proud about.

Paul Merson says Arsenal should be proud of Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly

Merson was speaking on Sky Sports about the impact made by Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Saka is one of the biggest success stories from the Hale End setup, becoming a star for club and country.

Meanwhile, teenage duo Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly are both becoming established first-team players at Arsenal.

Nwaneri has made 13 appearances for the Gunners this season, scoring four times, while Lewis-Skelly shone on his first Champions League start in Wednesday night’s 3-0 win over Monaco.

At the age of 18 years and 76 days, Lewis-Skelly became the youngest player to start a Champions League game for Arsenal since Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain against Olympiakos in 2011.

Merson told Sky Sports after the match: “There will be a lot of proud people at Arsenal, people involved in the academy.

“To bring players through like Bukayo Saka, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, young players playing in the Champions League, especially when you are talking about a team of this magnitude.

“It’s hard to do now so everyone at the club should be proud of themselves.

“Watching them play, you wouldn’t know they are kids. Lewis-Skelly gave the ball away once just before he came off and he was unlucky with that.

“Then Nwaneri comes on, gets on the ball and just plays. Fair play to everyone at Arsenal.”

What Saka has said about Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri

Saka told TNT Sport after the win over Monaco that Lewis-Skelly belongs at the highest level, and told him as much in the build-up to the match.

“What he’s doing, we see it in training,” Saka said. “I was pleased with him, he was a big part of the first goal.”

Saka then shared what Lewis-Skelly needs to do to build on his impressive display against Monaco.

“He’s very bright,” he said. “He just needs to keep the same head that he’s got.

“His mentality is top, he’s always asking questions, eager to learn. I’m so proud of him.”

And earlier this month, Saka said Nwaneri is a “really top talent” and backed him to “go to the top.”

Not only are Arsenal great at this moment in time, but their future is incredibly bright.
