Timo Werner
Timo Werner was hauled off at half-time as Tottenham drew 1-1 with Rangers
Ange Postecoglou branded Timo Werner’s performance “not acceptable” after Tottenham escaped a humiliating defeat to Rangers.
Dejan Kulusevski came off the bench to score a 75th-minute equaliser after the Scottish side took the deserved lead. And Fraser Forster needed to make a great late stop to save the former Celtic boss suffering a shock loss on his return to Glasgow last night. Tottenham have now won just once in eight.
Postecoglou vented his fury at the display of former Chelsea forward Werner before hooking him at half-time. The Spurs manager, whose squad has been hit by injuries, said: “He was not playing anywhere near the level he should.
“When you’ve got 18-year-olds it’s not acceptable to me. I said that to Timo. He’s a senior international, he’s a German international. In the moment we’re in right now, it’s not like we’ve got many options.

“I need everyone to at least be going out there trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn’t acceptable. We need everybody including him to be contributing. because we don’t have the depth to leave people out if they’re performing poorly.
“We need them to play their part. Especially the senior guys. When I’m asking younger guys to do massive jobs. I expect a level of performance from some of the senior guys and today wasn’t that.”
Spurs remain in ninth place in the Europa League with two games to go. Finishing in the top eight avoids another playoff round. “A tough game as expected, obviously with the atmosphere in the stadium,” Postecoglou added.

“We weren’t anywhere near our best which I think is fair to say and at the same time, we’re in a period of games where we’re grinding through at the moment. Obviously we are playing with a fairly depleted squad.
“So, in the context of that, in the end, I think it was a good outcome for us. I thought the substitutes made a difference and we scored a good goal, had other good moments and a great save by Fraser [Forster] at the end. We’ll probably look back on this as a good point.”
Gers boss Philippe Clement, who saw his side extend their unbeaten run to nine games, said: “I am very proud of the performance because it is the way I want football to be played. But I am also disappointed that we didn’t take the three points - that would have been even better and it would have been the result we deserved.”
