“The best players find a way of turning up every week,” Shearer told The Athletic. “Whoever the opposition and treating them the same. They turn up nine times out of 10. Newcastle are patently not doing this.

“There is no excuse for the lurch in performance from losing 2-0 at home to West Ham United and drawing 1-1 at Crystal Palace to Liverpool and then Brentford. Something isn’t right.”

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash at home to Leicester City, Gordon said: “One week we’re really good and the next we’re really poor, I think that’s where we need to improve. We’ve been a little bit inconsistent, me as well individually, I’ve been really inconsistent.

“If I could perform a bit better consistently I think the team would do better. [Alan] Shearer was right when he said against the big six we’re really good and against the other teams we’ve got to perform better.

“Yeah I saw them [Shearer’s comments], he’s right. Not of us can argue with what he said. If you watch us against a big six team at home, you sort of know what you’re going to get but us against a bottom half away from home you probably don’t know what you’re going to get.

“And that hurts, to be honest. it hurts to say. It’s not a good thing or what we want to be. We really need to come away from that sort of team we’ve been the last couple of games.”

Gordon has urged Newcastle to rediscover their form that saw them qualify for Champions League two seasons ago. They currently sit 12th in the Premier League, seven points off the top four.

“I don’t think there are any excuses to be honest, we just have to accept the responsibility because we’ve had all our players fit,” said Gordon. “We have a massive team with top players.

“We just need to be better, we need to work harder. We need to get better at being that dark arts team that we were the first two years. I think that’s what has been lacking, teams are finding it alright to play against us when that’s never been the case.”
